This week’s schedule:

Religion – We are beginning with Chapter 1: God Sends Us His Own Son.

Math – We are moving right along in Chapter 1.  This chapter begins with a review of addition and subtraction concepts.  Throughout this chapter, we will learn a few new vocabulary words.  These vocabulary words will be on the chapter test at the end of the chapter.  Students will eventually have these words in their notebook.

Reading- Our first story is Officer Buckle and Gloria (Pgs. 16-37).  Typically, we will introduce the story and vocabulary words on Monday and read the story on Tuesday.  However, since we did not have school yesterday, we did a double dose of reading.  Today, we discussed the vocabulary and read the story.  We will have a vocabulary/story comprehension test on Friday.  New this year, Friday’s reading test will also include a short skills test.  This week the reading skill is decoding words.  Throughout the week, we will practice using syllable patterns to decode long words.  This skill will appear on Friday’s test.

English/Writing – Our grammar skill this week is sentences.  We will identify what makes a sentence a sentence.  We will also start our creative writing.  I am going to use the “6 + 1 Traits of Writing” Model to teach writing.  I will share more about this model with you as we start our writing.

Spelling – This week our words have short a or short e vowel sounds.  The challenge words for the week are: else, guest, attention, heard, and listen.  The challenge words do not always follow the same spelling pattern as the basic 15 words.  These challenge words, however, will appear in the story.  Please practice all 20 words because all 20 will be tested on Friday.  Your child has all of these words in their notebook from the pretest we took this morning.

Handwriting- We will start with a quick review of printing, but move quickly into a review of cursive.  Students do not have to write in cursive…yet.  Keep practicing!

Social Studies/Science- Our two days are Monday and Thursday.  We will switch for the first time on Thursday.  We will start with MAPS in Social Studies and PLANTS in Science.
